What Is an 808?

An 808 is the long, tuned bass drum that carries the low end in trap and drill. The name comes from Roland’s TR-808 drum machine, released in 1980. Its bass drum could ring out into a long, booming tone, and producers started playing it like a bassline. Today most producers use 808 samples like the ones on this page. How to Make a Free 808 Hit Harder

1. Tune it to your beat. All four single 808s on this page are in C, so a C in your piano roll plays them at their natural pitch, and other notes follow your chords. An 808 that’s out of key sounds weak however loud it is.
